Details

It was discovered that Libav incorrectly handled certain malformed media
files. If a user were tricked into opening a crafted media file, an
attacker could cause a denial of service via application crash, or possibly
execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking the
program.

Update instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following package versions:

Ubuntu 12.10

• libavformat53 - 6:0.8.5-0ubuntu0.12.10.1
• libavcodec53 - 6:0.8.5-0ubuntu0.12.10.1

Ubuntu 12.04

• libavformat53 - 4:0.8.5-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
• libavcodec53 - 4:0.8.5-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

Ubuntu 11.10

• libavformat53 - 4:0.7.6-0ubuntu0.11.10.3
• libavcodec53 - 4:0.7.6-0ubuntu0.11.10.3

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
